Snow Bunnies
Snow bunnies can be great pets. In choosing a pet bunny, it is wise to know who the bunny will be for and where the bunny will be kept. Some breeds of rabbits are better suited to be indoor pets while others do well in an outside cage. Of course, temperaments of the rabbits differ among breeds. It is best to know what kind of pet your snow bunny will be.
With more than 40 recognizable breeds of rabbits, you will have a full range of choices. First is the category of size and shape. There are miniature bunnies in some breeds that may weigh two to four pounds. Other breeds grow very large and do not have a maximum growth range. All other rabbit breeds have upright ears.
Most people wouldn’t be able to tell someone the different shapes of bunnies, but they can have an idea of what a snow bunny looks like. Think of commercialized Easter bunnies with soft, white coats. They have little cotton tails, perky ears, and are snow white soft. Those snow bunnies are the New Zealand bunny or the miniature Netherland Dwarf. Both come are popular pets in the United States.
For inside bunnies, it is still wise to close off a section of the house so they cannot harm themselves or other things. Rabbit proofing your house is similar to child proofing certain rooms. If it is an outside bunny, then it is best to buy or build a hutch. Hutches need to be at least four times the size of your bunny. The bigger you can make the hutch the more comfortable and happier your bunny will be.
Rabbits are social creatures. Many people mistake bunnies for being animals that like constant holding or cuddling. Like other pets, rabbits have different personalities. Different breeds can be known for their different temperaments just like in dog and cat breeds. Rabbits do like company with human owners or other rabbits. If you plan to leave your bunny for many hours in the day, it would be beneficial to buy two rabbits for socialization. Rabbits should be housed with other rabbits and not with other animals such as guinea pigs.
If you already own cats or dogs, it is wise to introduce your new bunny with undivided supervision. Cats and dogs can get along with bunnies, but you must remember that cats and dogs are predatory animals. Rabbits are prey. They can be terribly frightened or hurt by just another animal stalking it.
Rabbits need your time just like other pets do. Rabbits enjoy gnawing and chewing so chew toys are great fun. Make sure cages and hutches provide a closed area for security as well as preventing the rabbit from chewing through the cage. Rabbits need time to run and hop, so it is important to take your bunny out for yard exercise. It is important to have daily and ample jump time.
You may have seen the commercials or books with cottontail or snow white bunnies. It is important not to base your decision based on just those looks. That being said, many of the snow bunnies are gentle and affectionate. If you are buying the snow bunny for your child, consider purchasing a rabbit that is easy for the child to hold.
