Breeding More and More Rabbits

If you are interested in purchasing a rabbit as a family pet you should carefully investigate your options to find a responsible rabbit breeder. Although rabbits as well as other small animals are readily available in pet stores, purchasing a rabbit from a responsible breeder is a much wiser decision. However, just opting for an individual rabbit breeder over purchasing a pet store rabbit does not guarantee that you will receive a healthy rabbit. Not all rabbit breeders are responsible and some of them should not be considered to be more reputable than those who breed rabbits for sale in pet stores. Care should be taken when choosing a rabbit breeder.

Before you even begin your search for a rabbit breeder, you should determine what type of rabbit you would like. There are a variety of different rabbit breeds available and they are not all the same in terms of size, coat, temperament or other important aspects. This may involve detailed research to determine which breed of rabbit would be most appropriate for your household. Although the research may be time consuming, in the end it will help you to choose a pet that will thrive in your home. The other benefit to determining which breed of rabbit you would prefer before you start searching for a rabbit breeder is that knowing which breed you prefer will greatly simplify your rabbit breeder search. You will be able to eliminate all rabbit breeders that do not breed the type of rabbit that you are looking to purchase.

Now that you know what breed of rabbit you would like to purchase, it is time to begin the search for a rabbit breeder. Start out by contacting local breeders and asking them a few preliminary questions that are of interest to you. You can certainly purchase a rabbit from a breeder in another state but you would mostly likely have to pay shipping fees along with the purchase of your rabbit. Some of the questions that might be helpful include; when is your next litter planned, how often do you breed, what types of rabbits do you breed, how many past litters have you bred and what type of tests do you conduct on the parents before breeding them? The answers to these questions should give you a good indication of whether or not you are interested in purchasing a pet from the rabbit breeder. If price is an important consideration, you should also ask about the price of the rabbits and what is included in that price. Rabbit breeders that you might eliminate after this step in the process include breeders that are out of your price range, breeders who do not properly screen the rabbits that they breed for health issues or deformities and breeders who have an excessively large amount of litters on the ground as this may be an indication of a rabbit breeder who is more concerned with profit than the health of the animals.

Once you have narrowed the rabbit breeders down to a few choices, it's time to visit their facility. This will give you the best indication of whether or not the rabbit breeder is responsible. Pay special attention to how the animals are housed and cared for while with the breeder. If they are kept in crowded and dirty kennels there is the possibility that disease will spread rapidly. Conversely rabbits that are kept in a clean environment and given adequate space may be healthier. The food that they are fed can also be an indication of the level of care that the animals receive. High quality food is favorable over food that does not provide proper nutrition.
